With support from the Population Studies Center, the Center for East Asian Studies at Penn, and the Academy of Korean Studies, Hyunjoon Park has organized the conference, Becoming an Adult in East Asia: Comparative and Interdisciplinary Approaches, to be held February 28 - March 1 at Penn. Emily Hannum, Yi-Lin Chiang, and Hyejeong Jo will present their papers at the conference.

Jerry A. Jacobs and NYU Professor Kathleen Gerson have been elected Co-Presidents of Sociologists for Women in Society (SWS). They will be serving a three-year term as presidents-elect, presidents, and past-presidents, and are responsible for organizing the winter and summer meetings in 2015. As an organization, SWS is entering its 45th year  900 members strong. Its journal, Gender & Society, has become a leading journal in Women's Studies and Sociology. SWS seeks to promote greater opportunities for women through efforts topromote feminist research, teaching and advocacy.

Hyunjoon Park has published an edited volume (with Kyung-keun Kim), Korean Education in Changing Economic and Demographic Contexts (Springer 2014),

This edited volume features 10 papers (in addition to the introduction by editors), which examine various challenges that recent economic and demographic changes pose for Korean education and its attempts to deal with those challenges.

Emilio Parrado has been selected along with 7 other Penn faculty members to serve as a Penn Fellow.  The Penn Fellows Program "provides leadership development to select Penn faculty members in mid-career" and gives them "opportunities to build cross-campus alliances, meet distinguished academic leaders, think strategically about universities and university governance, and consult with Penn's senior administrators."

This follows his recent election as a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics, the highest honor of the American Medical Informatics Association.

Dorothy Roberts, the George A. Weiss University Professor of Law and Sociology, and the Raymond Pace and Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander Professor of Civil Rights, will present the inaugural Provost's Lecture on Diversity tonight (11/13/2013) at 5:30pm (Annenberg School Room 110).  Professor Roberts will give a talk titled, "Interracial Marriage and the Civil Rights Revolution: A Personal Journey."

Regarding this opportunity, Professor Roberts states, "I am extremely excited and honored to give the inaugural Provost's Lecture on Diversity.  It will be my first time speaking in public about my new book project on the role interracial marriage played in the Civil Rights movement."

Professor Roberts adds, "My research project and my lecture are based on an amazing archive of papers I inherited from my father, an anthropology professor, including more than 500 interviews of black-white couples in Chicago that he conducted between 1937 and 1986. I will talk about the very personal journey I am embarking on to investigate the history and politics of interracial intimacy."

Jerry Jacobs spoke on October 24th and 25th before the Committee on the Science of Team Science of the National Research Council. The workshop was held in Washington D. C. at the National Academy of Sciences. Jacobs presented research from his forthcoming book on disciplines and interdisciplinarity.
