Research Interests: 

Microfinance institutions in rural China, poverty alleviation, social movements, civil society, non-governmental organizations, social inequality, public sphere, democratization theory, internet censorship and data mining.


Ran Liu is a current Ph.D. student in Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. She received her Bachelor's degree and Master of Philosophy in sociology both from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has been doing researches on the development and environment of Chinese microfinance institutions, poverty alleviation programs, non-governmental organizations and civil society; she is also interested in internet censorship and data mining.
