Tessa Huttenlocher

Tessa joined the University of Pennsylvania as a PhD student in 2016. Her research interests include organizations, civil society, and social control. She is particularly interested in how public interest organizations construct their relationship to the public good. Her current project is an ethnographic study of the development of advocacy and data collection projects within a newly formalized network of nonprofits.

Before coming to Penn, Tessa earned a BA in sociology from The University of Chicago. Her BA paper focused on the strategic trade-offs faced by nonprofits as they expand into new communities. After graduation, Tessa worked as a program analyst at the Chicago Housing Authority for two years.
