W.E.B. Du Bois Annual Event

On Friday, February 23, the Sociology Department at the University of Pennsylvania held the 2nd Annual Lecture in Public Social Science celebrating Du Bois' research and impact from his important work in the Sociology field that ground Sociological research still today.

This year, the conversation took place between Dr. Aldon Morris, Leon Forrest Professor of Sociology and African American studies and Dr. Tukufu Zuberi, Lasry Family Professor of Race Relations and Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Morris is an award-winning scholar, educator, mentor, and civil rights activist. Morris has published a number of articles and books, including “The Scholar Denied: W. E. B. Du Bois and the Birth of Modern Sociology,” in which he emphasizes how Du Bois’ contributions to sociology were suppressed for decades due to institutional racism.

Dr. Zuberi's creation of this lecture in honor of Du Bois has only continued the interest in young scholars to examine, celebrate, and continue Du Bois' legacy because, as Dr. Morris coined, "he has something fresh to say."
