Tyler Baldor has published a paper, "Acquainted Strangers: Thwarted Interaction in Digitally Mediated Urban Gay Bars" in Social Problems. Drawing on fieldwork in Philadelphia's Gayborhood, he analyzes how social interaction is thwarted in ostensibly social spaces. In particular, he argues that social media use creates relational ambiguities that make interacting with "acquainted strangers" offline difficult to navigate.
