Jessica McCrory Calarco received her doctorate from our department in 2012 before joining the Department of Sociology at Indiana University where she is an Associate Professor. As a doctoral student she published an article, “I Need Help! Social Class and Children’s Help-Seeking in Elementary School” in the American Sociological Review. Her dissertation was published as Negotiating Opportunities: How the Middle Class Secures Advantages in School (Oxford 2018); it won the 2020 Bourdieu Best Book Award in the Sociology of Education Section of the ASA. She is also the author of A Field Guide to Grad School: Uncovering the Hidden Curriculum (Princeton 2020).
