Ph.D. candidate Doron Shiffer-Sebba and Hyunjoon Park recently published a paper on intergenerational transmission of advantage in Social Forces. The paper finds that parental background has enduring effects on income throughout the life course, but this effect differs as individuals age. Upon entry to the labor market, the effects of parental background are not substantial. But, as individuals reach their prime earning years, similarly educated individuals diverge in their earnings according to parental background. This phenomenon is less pronounced for women than for men.
