Faculty Conversations with Camille Z. Charles and Eve Higginbotham

Talking about Diversity in the Job Search and in Faculty Careers
Mar 16, 2016 at - | Houston Hall, Ben Franklin Room

A commitment to diversity and inclusion is often expressed in institutional mission statements, yet what this means within any particular school or department can vary greatly.  Topics in this program will provide a helpful discussion of issues that might affect doctoral students and postdocs, in particular those on the academic job market.

Speakers:

Eve Higginbotham SM, MD, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Vice Dean, Inclusion and Diversity; Senior Fellow, Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics; Professor of Ophthalmology, Scheie Eye Institute

Camille Z. Charles PhD, University of Pennsylvania Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Term Professor in the Social Sciences; Professor of Sociology, Africana Studies & Education; Director, Center for Africana Studies

Through this program, PhDs will have the opportunity to learn what search committees may look for in diversity statements and to discuss how applicants might handle conversations about identity (racial, ethnic, gender) while on an interview.  The conversation will also address questions that might come up for those who are newly in faculty roles, such as understanding the role of diversity in university service, thinking about tenure while balancing demands of teaching, research and service, and finding support while in a new job.

This event is part of an annual series, "Faculty Conversations on the Academic Job Search and Academic Life" and is co-sponsored by Career Services and the Vice Provost for Education.
