Keynote Panel

The Globalization TrendLab at the Lauder Institute and The Wharton School seeks to generate new knowledge and analysis on the problems and opportunities inherent to a global economy through annual academic conferences linking highly respected scholars and practitioners from around the world. The fourth conference will take place on April 17-18 2014 and will focus on the theme of The Future of the State.

We have invited thought leaders from diverse disciplinary and professional backgrounds to analyze contemporary challenges facing states and to propose innovative solutions through focused panels. These panels will foster discussion around a select number of areas including: (1) efforts to address persistent fiscal crises and prospects for welfare states; (2) whether the rise of ‘state capitalism’ offers a viable alternative to ‘neoliberalism’; and (3) the pressing issues facing fragile and failed states.

The conference will synthesize our collective learning on the topic of The Future of the State and offer guidance on new thinking and potential strategies to policymakers, business leaders and members of the NGO community. The conference will bring together well-established intellectuals and practitioners from the social sciences, public policy and the non-profit sector, and in top universities, international organizations, think-tanks, non-governmental organizations and consultancies to learn from each other’s perspectives. Our hope is that the conference will have a broad impact on the intellectual community and public discourse through the sharing of diverse perspectives and the wide circulation of a professionally written discussion paper that summarize
