Are you aware of your online and digital presence? What do you find when your Google yourself – is it what you want to see? What will other people, including search committees, make of you after encountering the digital version of you? There is no way to avoid leaving a digital footprint in this day and age, and many current faculty members have embraced the multitude of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc.) to share their research, their thoughts, and their personal opinions. However, what is the best advice for current students, postdocs, and even junior faculty members when it comes to managing and cultivating a professional and helpful digital presence? Can your online profile help or hurt you when you are on the academic job market or applying for grants? Will your personal thoughts and opinions that you might share online be held against you when seeking a job or tenure? There are several examples covered in the press where this seems to have happened to one degree or another.

Join us for this panel discussion as faculty members provide their insights into the pros and cons of an active digital presence. Learn about how they manage their academic image online, and whether they have seen tangible benefits from their efforts. Panelists will share their advice on finding the right voice for different social media platforms, and discuss some of the possible future pitfalls to avoid. Panelists include:

Etienne Benson, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, History & Sociology of Science, University of Pennsylvania
Tukufu Zuberi, Ph.D., Professor of Sociology & Africana Studies, The Lasry Family Professor of Race Relations, University of Pennsylvania
Amy Jordan, Ph.D., Associate Director of Policy Implementation, Annenberg Public Policy Center; Adjunct Professor, Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania
