Careers and Continuing Education of Sociology Graduates

What can you do with a Sociology major from Penn? The opportunities are limitless...

The skills developed in Sociology transcend many fields and careers. In particular, organizations desire to better understand the populations that they serve, and the forces that afford and restrict the choices available to and the decisions ultimately made by these populations. Your academic training in Sociology will enable you to stand out as someone who not only can interpret quantitative and qualitative data, but also as someone who can analyze and break down the complexities of everyday life and the effect these complexities have on people, groups and populations across the world.

Below is a sample of the paths that recent Penn Sociology majors have taken since graduation:

  • Advertising
    • Some areas in this field our students have pursued post- graduation include: client management, project management, social media management, and other Communications-related fields. 
  • Business Consulting and services
    • Some areas in this field our students have pursued post- graduation include: consultant positions across several different industries, cloud engineering, venture analysts, Founder & CEO's of companies.
  • Continuing Education
    • Some of our students who have graduated are now pursuing law school, medical school, and graduate school opportunities at high-ranking Master's and PhD programs. 
  • Education
    • ​​​​​​​Some areas in this field our students have pursued post-graduation include: K12 teaching, higher education admissions, and various management positions within the realm of Education. 
  • Finance/Insurance
    • ​​​​​​​Some areas in this field our students have pursued post-graduation include: management, executive and chief operating positions, and analysts.

    • ​​​​​​​Some areas in this field our students have pursued post- graduation include: citywide strategy & analysis planning, analyzing housing policy, and assisting government campaigns.
